A couple weeks ago I shared a blog post about Gretchen Rubin’s new book, The Four Tendencies – all about understanding our personality profiles. I mentioned that I’d be highlighting each of the tendency profiles in a Q&A style with someone who falls under each category.
The first tendency profile I’m highlighting is that of an ‘obliger’. Someone who is more likely to meet outer expectations and resist inner expectations. Obligers are great bosses, responsive leaders and excellent team players. They are responsible, willing to go the extra mile and are super responsive to outer accountability. They put a high value on meeting commitments and are very successful when they have deadlines to meet.
When I put out the ask that I was looking for people to interview, I came back with a lot of people who said they were obligers (after taking the quiz). I ended up choosing two amazing ladies who are total bosses and am excited to share a look into their ‘obliger’ personality profiles with you. Today I’ll be featuring Jordyn Taylor, digital news editor at Men’s Health Magazine, and tomorrow I’ll be profiling Lauren Ott, who leads Canadian business development for a non-profit.
Without further ado, meet Jordyn!
Jordyn, what three words best describe you?
Loving, outgoing, curious
What is your astrological sign?
What is your favourite colour?
It changes all the time—I’ve never been able to pick one! Right now I’m feeling charcoal grey.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
I like doing something active during the day like a workout class, run in the park, or a day hike. At night, I like to go for dinner and drinks with my husband or friends. I’m not a big partier, but I love spending the evening in a cozy bar with good people.
What is your role at work?
I’m the digital news editor at Men’s Health magazine.
What is your favourite thing about the work you do?
There are so many things I enjoy about my job—it’s hard to choose!
I love working one-on-one with reporters to make their pieces as strong as possible. It’s like a puzzle we get to solve together as a team, and it’s so satisfying when we land on the perfect word or phrase to get the meaning across.
I also love getting to work in the lifestyle space. Health and wellness are two of my passions, so I’m always deeply invested in the stories we publish every day.
What is the least favourite thing about the work you do?
Anyone who works in media will probably tell you this, but it can be frustrating when you work hard on an important story and it doesn’t get the traffic you hoped for. We sometimes joke that the stories you spend the least time on are always the ones that get the most views.
When you’re working on a team project, what type of role do you typically play?
Two roles come to mind. I know I tend to be the organized one who keeps the team focused on completing the task at hand in the allotted time. I also tend to mediate conflict—I want to make sure everyone gets along and works together as effectively as possible.
When you’re in a stressful situation, how do you deal with it?
I’m the opposite of a person who procrastinates or runs away from problems—I always like to solve problems as quickly as possible. I think about how good it’ll feel to be on the other side of a stressful situation, and I do whatever it takes to get there.
I’m not saying it’s always the right strategy. Sometimes, my all-encompassing need to eliminate sources of stress ends up making me more stressed out. There are certain stressful situations where you really just need to wait it out, and I’m trying to get better at sitting in that discomfort.
How do you de-stress?
Exercise, mindless TV, and therapy!
What is your definition of success?
In my personal life, success means having someone to love, someone who loves me, and something to look forward to. My dad taught me that when I was little, and it stuck with me.
I suspect this ties into my “Obliger” identity, but in my professional life, I define success as being a valued member of a team—someone who makes meaningful contributions to the work we put out every day.
How do you stay organized?
I know lots of people use the calendars on their phones, but I prefer making handwritten notes in my weekly planner.
Coffee or tea?
Both! I love starting my morning with a latte, and drinking tea on the couch with my husband after dinner.
Sweet or savoury?
Savoury all the way.
Favourite podcast (if any)?
I don’t listen to any! I think I’m a weak auditory learner. I prefer reading.
