Today’s Wisdomm Series features Bianca Harris, a Toronto girl-boss who is a content creator, makeup artist and founder of Women Inspiring Passion and Purpose (WIPP) – an amazing, amazing organization that provides events, workshops and podcasts to provide impactful discussions focused on career cultivation, mental health, body image and sexuality.
I was lucky enough to meet Bianca after being referred to THELOOKBEAUTY for my bridal makeup – she did an amazing job! We had a great connection and I’m so excited to share more about this inspiring lady today.
Q: In three words how would you describe yourself?
A: Confident. Emotional. Driven.
Q: What inspired you to start WIPP?
A: I was inspired to start WIPP mainly because I was getting lots of feedback from people I encountered and worked with asking how I started my freelance business. They were looking to cultivate a career and were wanting advice. It was really a mix of that.
I’ve also always been surrounded by women my whole life. I grew up with my mom, who was a single-mom. I was a dancer. I’m now a makeup artist. I’m just always around strong women who make me feel connected to them. I love being in a group of women. So now I want to give back and create a safe space for women to talk publicly about things that aren’t generally talked about.
Q: What type of conversations would those be?
A: Well with friends you’ll talk about mental health, breakups, feeling depressed, you know? I want to open it up to other women to create a space to talk about our bodies, our mental health and work stuff. As much as WIPP is about talking about careers, it’s also much deeper. Working can affect all those things – mental health, body image, etc – and can make us unhappy. I want to go deeper and focus on mind, body and soul.
Q: You have lots on the go – as a makeup artist and founder of WIPP – how do you stay organized?
A: I’m not the most organized person but I think creating a system helps me stay organized. When I need to be organized I’m super organized. For example, at the last event, I surrounded myself with a huge amount of people to create an organized system…because I’m not really naturally organized. I had a good team.
Integrity is one word I always go to. Being accountable for yourself and a team.
Q: What’s your favourite thing about your job(s)?
A: I really like being a leader. It’s something I’m really good at. I think being a good leader is getting people around you to also be leaders. I have the personality that I can be a leader.
Leader and boss are two different things. Creating other leaders around you is when you know you’re successful and I like being able to learn from other people…other leaders.
Q: Traditional agenda or iCal?
A: I always want to be the girl with the really cool agenda. All my friends have agendas that they write in…but I just can’t do it. I have everything in my iPhone. I don’t show up if I don’t have it scheduled in my phone.
Q: Go-to stress reliever?
A: Meditating and yoga.
A: Try to.
I struggle with weather. A lot of women do…I’m actually going to buy a sun lamp online tonight! If I don’t have sun I get depressed. I just need to do yoga…do a workout, sweat and not think for an hour. It can be a life saver if I don’t do those classes.
Q: Favourite comfort food?
A: Chocolate. Definitely chocolate when I’m PMSing.
Q: Favourite room in your home?
A: My bedroom. I’m an introvert and I like to have my own time in my room. I can get a lot of work done in my room…which can be good and bad because I can isolate myself…but it’s good. I put on chill music and have my incense on.
Q: Do you have a desk in your room or do you work from your bed?
A: I plop my laptop on my bed…put something between me and my laptop. Nothing fancy.
Q: Favourite book?
A: I’m not a big reader but a big listener of books. I like audiobooks, podcasts – I like TED talks on podcasts.
The book that affected me the most was when I read the power of now. It’s such a basic for learning to be in the moment. It was the book I read when I started learning to be present. That book really opened my eyes up.
Q: Speaking of podcasts, you just launched a podcast for WIPP. Who do you feature on it? Can you explain what it’s all about?
A: So ya, I just launched the WIPP podcast. I pretty much bring on entrepreneurial females once a week to talk about how to cultivate a career. It’s more interview based. I wanted it to be more of a conversation but I’m going to be introducing another portion to the podcast once a month to have more of a relaxed discussion…a space to really be yourself, without the edited version. I want to talk about real shit and whatever comes up in the convo comes up. But I do love interviewing super successful women too…it’s really fun.
Q: Inspirational role model?
A: I don’t know. I get inspired a lot. Underneath it all I’m an artist and a creative.
I’m such an ideas person, which can be annoying sometimes because I move onto another idea when I’m not done the last one. But I’d probably have to say I’m inspired by my dad. He has the same business drive as me – super aggressive and a go getter. He actually doesn’t even know I think that.
Q: Favourite item in your makeup bag? …You can pick more than one
A: I don’t wear a lot of makeup at all for a makeup artist, maybe for the average person but not for a makeup artist.
I have the things I have to wear…but for a favourite item? I don’t know my favourite…maybe lipstick?
Q: Go-to warm drink?
A: Love coffee. I’m Italian and Italians love coffee. I grew up on coffee, drank coffee since I was born. My grandma gave us espresso when we were two.
Q: Is there anything else you want people to know about WIPP?
A: I want it to become international and really big. I’m working really hard. I don’t want it to just be a local brand…I want it internationally recognized. I want to go to a different places and give back. I guess it’s not something that people want to know…but it’s something I want to do.
If you haven’t heard of WIPP, check out the website and listen to the WIPPED C.R.E.A.M Podcast – it’s so real and refreshing.
