There’s no doubt classical music induces a sense of tranquility. It’s so relaxing. It can easily calm the mind, slow down breathing, loosen muscles, and if you’re in the right environment it can put. you. to. sleep.
I’ve always enjoyed classical music. I find it helped me focus when I was writing essays at school, it helps me fall asleep if I put my alarm clock on ‘sleep mode’ and I often listen to it at work if I’m feeling stressed or anxious.
We all know it’s relaxing, but listening to classical also has a bunch of other benefits for your mind and body.
Here are three reasons why YOU should listen to more classical music:
1. It lowers blood pressure: A study from the American Society of Hypertension stated that listening to classical, Celtic or Indian music for 30 minutes a day has an impact on helping to reduce blood pressure.
2. It helps you to sleep like a baby: According to a study in 2006, people who drifted off to sleep with the sounds of classical tunes slept a whole lot better than those who fell asleep without listening to classical music. It can even help with people who suffer with insomnia.
3. It helps to reduce anxiety: I 100% feel the effects of this benefit when I listen to classical music. I feel like my whole body relaxes. You know that feeling when you’re at the spa and you just feel like you’re in total bliss? That’s the feeling I get when I listen to classical. A 2017 study about listening to relaxing songs in pregnancy reduced prenatal anxiety and depression…so if it can reduce a pregnant lady’s stress, it definitely can help reduce yours.
One of my favourite ways to listen to classical music is tuning into Toronto’s Classical FM radio station on 96.3, or simply typing in “classical music” into YouTube. OR, if you want to make an evening out of it, you can check out some live classical music venues. I recently had the opportunity to visit Koerner Hall in Toronto for their opening night concert of Tafelmusik, which is Canada’s internationally acclaimed period instrument baroque orchestra. It was seriously an amazing performance. The venue us gorgeous, the seats are super comfortable and I don’t think there is one bad seat in the house. It’s crazy to watch a group of people play so perfectly – it’s nothing I’ve ever witnessed before. I felt my muscle tension float away and my breathing deepen as I listened during the two hour performance. It was a romantic night out and something I’d highly recommend checking out.
