Today I’m introducing my new series: Wisdomm. Every week I’ll be highlighting a Canadian, entrepreneurial lady who’s a super girl boss with an awesome brand and wisdom to share. I’ll be featuring why she’s doing what she’s doing, what helps her to stay stress-free and organized, and questions that pertain to her work.
Today I am featuring Alyssa Bertram, a Toronto lady who launched easy. a feminine hygiene product company that delivers tampons and pads to your doorstep every three months. Easy. is helping to defy the taboo and shame that comes along with periods, it’s easing the task of having to go to the store to stock up on monthly products and it’s encouraging a conversation to break the stigma of menstruation. It’s a pretty amazing company.
For $45, easy. delivers a three-month supply of tampons and/or pads (including shipping) and throws in a delicious chocolate bar…perfect for the time of month! $45 may seem a bit pricy compared to the common, conventional tampon and pad brands, but it’s because they’re much healthier for your body (and the environment). So many feminine hygiene products contain awful chemicals, including synthetic fibres that shed in the vaginal walls (yuk!). 100% organic cotton products (which easy. provides) are safe and don’t contain polyester, dyes, fragrances or other synthetic ingredients found in regular sanitary products.
To be honest, I’ve never found the conventional tampon to feel very comfortable…I mean, it never occurred to me that it should be comfortable…but switching to organic tampons is a game changer. The sensitivity I used to feel with the common brands no longer occur with organic tampons…they’re actually comfortable. I love them!
I’m a huge lover of chocolate, every single day…but when it comes to my period it’s all I really want…and for Alyssa, it’s her go-to comfort food too…
Q: What’s your go-to comfort food during your period?
Q: When cramps strike, what do you do to feel better?
A: Tea, hot water bottle, chocolate and a book or movie
Q: Do you PMS? What’s your most frustrating symptom?
A: I do! I feel more tired than usual and irritable.
Q: Favourite chocolate bar?
A: Hershey’s cookies and cream.
Q: Tea or coffee?
Q: Heating pad or warm bath?
A: Warm bath.
Q: Why did you decide to start easy.? (I do know the answer to this from your website, but if you have anything else to add, please feel free).
A: I decided to start easy. first because I wanted my tampons delivered to me and later because I became passionate about advocating for women having access to safe and healthy products.
Q: Why do you think periods are so taboo???
A: I don’t think they are but I think society might label them that way because they pertain typically to the vagina. Anything that is seen as solely a women’s issue (being mindful of the fact that people other than women do menstruate) is often ill understood. That is why I believe it’s important to educate both men and women on menstruation and it’s many implications personally and for society as a whole.
Q: Have you ever encountered an awkward moment with your period that made you feel embarrassed?
A: Definitely! I’ve had leaks or times where I was without a tampon when I got my period. It can be horribly embarrassing because it’s something that we’ve been taught is shameful. I hope that we can make progress toward reducing this shame.
Q: Who’s your role model?
A: It would be hard to choose just one. I definitely look up to my mom who is extremely resilient. I was taught by her that there is nothing I cannot do and I believe that.
Side bar: how great is the ad to the right? I love how real it is. Check out the link to see the other ads in this campaign. They are great.
Q: Any tips for work/life balance?
A: That’s a great question and something I’m still figuring out. I’d say for those who are tired so closely to their business like I am, ensuring that you separate your identity from your business. Meaning make time for those things that inspire and challenge you outside of your business.
Q: What’s your favourite room in your home?
A: My room! It’s my sanctuary full of books, records and usually with incense burning.
Q: What keeps your organized?
A: My Google calendar. I’ve really come to rely on it and I’m sad to say I’d probably be lost without it.
Q: What’s your go-to when you’re feeling stressed?
A: Yoga! Something that calms my breathing. Also, writing out my worries.
Q: Favourite item in your makeup bag?
A: Hm, I’ve never thought about that. I think I’d have to say mascara? When I’m tired I feel like it can make me look awake haha.
*I was provided with a free three-month supply from easy. in return for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and not influenced by easy. in any way. I truly love this service.
