I’m so excited to be launching a new series on The Omm Life called 10 x 10. It works like this: I’ll be highlighting 10 different wellness-based businesses all under the same category, over 10 different days within 3-4 weeks at a time. There will be a variety of 10 x 10 series, like 10 x 10 yoga, 10 x 10 pilates, 10 x 10 meditation, etc.
My first 10 x 10 is featuring yoga studios and a few days ago I kicked it off by visiting 889 (at 889 Yonge Street) – a studio focused on inspiring happy, healthy, peaceful lives.
I had walked by 889 a handful of times before initially visiting, and every time I had walked by their white store front and peered into the windows, it just looked SO relaxing. When I finally walked through their doors last week, it was exactly that – relaxing! I signed in on their iPad, borrowed one of their mats (which are freshly cleaned after each use) and locked up my belongings in their locker room.
Before the class started, I browsed around their beautifully curated shop – full of amazing wellness products, including some of my favourites from Sam Yoga (a local Toronto brand), BKR and Smash + Tess. I then made my way upstairs and sat peacefully in their lounge. A perfect place to get in the right mindset for yoga. No cellphones are allowed in class and they make clear that they understand the importance of unplugging to allow yourself to internally focus – which I’m all about!
Once I set up my mat and props in the ‘Sun’ room, I lay down and breathed in the burning sage that the teacher was smudging around the space. It was the perfect start to a cleansing Vinyasa Flow class – for both mind and body. Carolina, our teacher, was so thorough in explaining each sequence and posture and I loved how she provided adjustments throughout the class. At the beginning of the class she gave us each an ‘adjustment card’. One side said ‘yes’ and the other side ‘no’. The cards were there for us to quietly indicate what we preferred in order to let her know if we wanted personal adjustments or not. I thought this was very clever of 889 to have – as it bypassed any awkwardness that could ensue if anyone wasn’t keen on having adjustments (although, I am always up for an adjustment!).
The class was an hour long and I left feeling refreshed and ready to take on the rest of my work day (the class was a 12:30 p.m. time slot). I would have loved to sit in their lounge all day and just breathe in the peacefulness of 889, but I had an expiring parking meter…and a to-do list that needed tackling!
I really loved everything about my experience at 889 – it was peaceful, quiet, invigorating and relaxing – I would highly recommend!
You can check out 889’s class schedule here, and if you’re ever in the neighbourhood – stop by their shop…I wish I had done so sooner!
